Eastside’s July 2023 Updates

Dear Friends of Eastside,

As we approach the summer holidays, we’ve started planning ahead for the next academic year, and we can already tell it’s going to be an exciting one with a great deal of work being planned to support thousands of young people across the country.

To help us do this work we also need support closer to home, which is why we are looking to refresh and strengthen our Board of Trustees.

Trustee and Chair Recruitment

Eastside’s Trustee recruitment is now open for applications.
We are also looking to appoint a new Chair of Trustees to support and drive our growth during our upcoming 30th Anniversary year.

Spoken Word Power Anthology

At the end of June we held a celebration event for our Spoken Word Power 2023 Anthology. The event was a chance for our team, artists and friends of Eastside to come together and celebrate all the hard work that went into making this year’s Spoken Word Power programme a success.

Spoken Word Power 2024 Theme Announcement

We’re happy to share the new theme for our third year of Spoken Word Power, ‘Hear My Voice’ .

‘Hear My Voice’ explores what it means to be listened to, what it means to listen, and why we want to be heard. This theme encourages children and young people to use poetry as a platform to explore the issues facing their communities, their generation, and their wider world, whilst empowering them to take ownership of the conversations to come.

The new cohort of schools for next year’s programme are due to begin their Spoken Word Power journey in the Autumn Term.

Black History Month

With October just around the corner, we’ve opened bookings for our Black History Month School Workshops.
All artist-led, the workshops will offer students the chance to take part in interactive West African traditional tales, explore the incredible lives of Black History Heroes, try African drumming or take part in spoken word poetry workshops inspired by Black British Artists.

Artists in Residence

Over the last few weeks, our Artists in Residence programmes held in schools across London, have come to their culminations in a series of Creative Festivals within participating schools. This has included open-air film screenings, poetry slams and drama performances.

Smiley Movement

The wonderful team over at The Smiley Movement have been following our work over the past few months, getting an inside look into what we do and the difference we make; filming young people participating in our programmes, and conducting interviews with our staff. Two films have already been released, with a third on its way in the coming weeks.

Support Us

After a successful April Foolery fundraising gala earlier this year, bringing our Lund Fund total to over £50,000, we’re keen to keep up the momentum and hit our £100,000 goal by the end of 2023.

If you’re feeling generous, please consider donating to us.
Your support means the world to us!

Wishing you a wonderful summer,
