Verse vs Verse Celebration Page

A celebration of the students' work

Well done and congratulations to all the students and teachers from Hobbayne, Kenmont, Norbury, Oakington Manor, St John Fisher, Sudbury, The Village School, Wendell Park and Woodfield, who have worked so hard and unlocked so much creativity over the past 3 years. We have enjoyed every moment of working with you and we hope it has been an experience to remember.

Thank you to the brilliant Eastside artists who have delivered Verse vs Verse workshops in schools, and to John Lyon’s Charity for their generous support of the project. For more information about the project please click here or why not book a creative workshop for your school?

Each year of the project, participating classes took part in an annual Spoken Word Poetry Slam at the Criterion Theatre in London’s West End. Students were mentored by a professional poet at their school, to develop spoken word poems in groups. Each group performed at their School Poetry Slam and one team from each class performed in the West End Poetry Slam. In 2018, the theme was ‘Imagine…’ and poems from Year 4 students pushed the weird and wonderful limits of their imaginations.

All participating classes worked with professional animators in their school to create an animated class movie using stop-motion animation. Each class worked with a storyteller to create a class character who cares about their world and came up with a story for how the character tries to help make the world a better place.

Animated films express themes that children felt strongly about in the world around them, such as the environment, homelessness and bullying.

All participating classes worked with professional filmmakers in their school to create small film crews and make their very own short films.

Films explore the theme ‘Stepping Up’, and consider topics such as the responsibilities that children face in Year 6, as well as looking ahead to the changes that secondary school will bring, and explore heroes in the world who have set positive examples of ‘Stepping Up’.
