lights... camera... arts award!

Today (Friday 14th March 2014), we received the fantastic news that 19 of our young people, aged 16-20, have all successfully achieved a Silver Arts Award as part of the BFI Film Academy delivered by Eastside. Earlier today, a moderator from the Arts Award visited Eastside to assess the work and was really impressed by the blogs and films that the young people have created. It's a wonderful achievement and our congratulations to everyone involved!

Our young filmmakers have all been working towards the qualification by documenting their artistic development in their chosen arts practice since October last year. Each student took on a different role within their film crew to develop a particular skill; this included directing, scriptwriting, editing, producing and cinematography. The final result was 5 original short films which were premiered at Rich Mix in February. Alongside this, they were required to find out more about career pathways in the film industry by meeting professional filmmakers, researching training opportunities and attending film related events such as masterclasses and film festivals.

In January this year, we set the participants the challenge of organising their own arts event in the form of a film screening or filmmaking workshop for their peers at school. One student, for example, organised a screening and presentation of her short film with a focus on sound design for GCSE media students; another ran a series of storyboarding and filmmaking workshops for members of his school’s Film Club. By delivering all aspects of the project, from recruiting participants and facilitating workshops, to filling out risk assessments, the group gained an insight into event organisation and planning, and developed their leadership skills in the process. They recorded their journey through the Arts Award by creating blogs onto which they uploaded photos, diary entries and video clips to demonstrate their learning.

Eastside would like to say a big thank you to all the teachers and mentors who supported the students in the process of achieving their Arts Awards. Applications for the BFI Film Academy 2014/15 will open in September 2014. If you are interested in taking part or working towards an Arts Award please contact us for more information.
