A new, funded project supporting Primary, Secondary, and SEND schools to creatively champion the spoken word, nurture positive attitudes to language and learning and provide a platform for the young voices of a generation.

Participate in a two-year journey consisting of inspiring drama and spoken word poetry workshops, performance opportunities for your students in your schools and the West End, plus teacher CPD sessions led by industry professionals.

How does it work?

Year One:

Starting in September 2021 your students would work with Eastside’s facilitators to explore the project’s annual theme, selected by Young People and Teachers, developing their very own pieces of spoken word poetry to perform in your School Poetry Slam to an audience of peers, families, and teachers, and nominating one class poet (or team of poets) to represent the class in a celebratory inter-school World Poetry Day celebration in the West End. You will also receive two high-quality teacher CPD workshops, and teaching resources to support the whole process.

Participating classes receive:

  • 2 x Teacher CPD workshops in spoken word/drama
  • 2 x Drama Student Workshops
  • 2 x Spoken Word Poetry Student Workshops
  • Mentoring & Support from your school Poet in Residence in putting on a school poetry slam
  • Trip to the World Poetry Day celebration in the West End, with nominated class poet(s) performing
  • Login access to Eastside’s online hub of creative classroom resources supporting the project

Year Two:

During Year Two, your school will be encouraged to apply the learning from Year One to run the project more independently.  You will be supported by a refresher CPD and access to Eastside’s online hub of creative classroom resources, Livestream workshops with Eastside facilitators, on-demand video lessons & support on how to host your own school poetry slam.

Participating classes receive:

  • Refresher CPD workshop
  • Login access to Eastside’s online hub of creative classroom resources.
  • Mentoring & Support to put on your school poetry slam
