Verse vs Verse was a 3-year Creative Literacy project for 7 Primary schools and two SEN schools in North and West London.
450 students participated in three years of creative activities led by professional practitioners in their school and took part in an annual West End poetry slam. The programme was designed to enhance personal and academic skills and to build excitement around literacy learning in pupils. In addition Verse vs Verse aimed to equip teachers with professional development workshops and resources to help inject creativity into the classroom and help schools embed poetry and the spoken word within school life.
“In a world where we focus on the negative, it was refreshing that children from all backgrounds and academic abilities could express themselves. I know that for one little boy in particular in my class, this is the beginning of a very positive road for him and a day he will never forget.” Verse vs Verse Teacher
“The atmosphere and response from the children was fantastic to feel and we were all really impressed by the articulate responses of the pupils to the theme, and their interpretations of our world and where it should be…” Debbie Howitt, Grants & Communications Officer, John Lyon’s Charity
