December update

Dear friends,

As we approach the end of another extraordinary year, we are reflecting on a busy period of activity, through summer and autumn.

As ever, the Eastside team has been hard at work, dedicated to providing as many creative and cultural opportunities as possible to children and young people across the country.

Earlier this month, with COP26 and the impacts of climate change very much at the forefront of our minds we concluded the Environmental Filmmakers Project. With the younger generation most impacted by the effects of climate change, this project has empowered young filmmakers giving them professional support to share their message with the wider world in a powerful short film created to showcase how young people are using the law to fight climate change

Please grab a coffee and find a cosy corner for 15 minutes and have a look at the inspiring short films, Home Into Sea, A Plant’s Life, Chocolate and How To Own An Island each of which casts fresh perspective on climate change. Looking ahead, we are thrilled to be the new host of the Creative Schools programme, furthering the outstanding work that Stratford Circus has delivered over the last five years. The programme enables children and young people in schools and colleges with limited arts and cultural provision to experience high-quality creative arts projects with professional artists.

The subsidised program is open to schools and colleges to support them to meet their improvement and wider curriculum needs, with Eastside designing and commissioning a unique project around their needs. If you are interested in finding out more about how we can bring this programme to your young people, please register your interest using the link above.

We are excited to announce that our Spoken Word Power (SWP) launch event is taking place on 11th January 2022 at the Criterion Theatre, Piccadilly. SWP is a fantastic three year funded program supporting Primary, Secondary and SEND schools across the nation to creatively champion the spoken word, nurturing positive attitudes to language and learning and providing a platform for the vibrant voices of a new generation of young people. If you are interested in attending the launch, please email

In collaboration with our partners Grimm & Co, Writing on the Wall and Essex Book Festival the project makes language exciting, inclusive and fun, and develops oracy, speaking & listening, and writing skills through enquiry-based, collaborative approaches, injecting joy into school life. Students will work with a trained local Poet Educator to develop their very own pieces of spoken word poetry hosting their own School Poetry Slam.  Please register your interest in the program using the website link above.

As a charity, funding is essential to the continuation of our  work with children and young people across the London area and beyond. We were honoured to set up the Lund Fund following a £10,000 donation from the estate of the late David Lund. David was an outstanding English teacher at University College School (UCS), passionate about teaching, literature, jazz music, and creativity in all its forms. David left a huge mark on every student he ever taught and on the wider community.

Our ambitious goal is to convert this initial gift into £1million to repay a debt of gratitude to the Lund family and build a long-lasting legacy which helps transform the educational experiences of many underserved and disadvantaged young people for years to come. In support of this Eastside and UCS are excited to present a gala evening of comedy and music in memory of David Lund, with MC Hugh Dennis and headliner act Simon Brodkin. The ‘April Foolery’ event will take place in the Lund Theatre at UCS on the 12th April 2022 at 6.30pm. Tickets for the much anticipated event, including a drinks reception and entertainment are available from Eventbrite.

As ever thank you for your wonderful support over the year and please do get in touch if you have any questions, ideas or would like to join our story.

Thanks for your continued support, and have a great December!

Matt and the Eastside Team
