April Update

Dear friends,

What an amazing time we have had recently at Eastside.

In March 2022, as part of SPOKEN WORD POWER, children in Merseyside, South Yorkshire, Essex and London attended inspirational poetry celebration events in selected local theatres, performing their own original poems live to audiences of supportive classmates, friends, family and other participating schools. Themes such as identity, racism, the environment were prominent, all derived from the 2022 project theme Speaking My Truth. We are so proud that SPOKEN WORD POWER has reached so many schools across the country developing thousands of young voices and thanks must go to our team and our wonderful partners and everyone who has helped deliver this important work. Enjoy a selection of the inspirational live poetry performances here.

We are now accepting applications for prospective new partners to join Essex Book Festival, Grimm & Co and Writing on the Wall in delivering SPOKEN WORD POWER to more students in schools across more English regions. Please explore our  partner recruitment pack and spread the word!

We are also recruiting a new Finance and Operations Manager  – please review the full job spec here and kindly share the opportunity with your networks.

Looking ahead, on Tuesday 12th April we will be hosting our first ever fundraising gala event ‘April Foolery’ at the Lund Theatre at University College School. This star studded event will feature performances from Hugh Dennis, Simon Brodkin, the Olivier Award winning musical improv team Showstopper!, as well as performances by Poetess Jess and the UCS Senior Jazz ensemble. This spectacular evening of comedy and jazz will raise money for an exciting new fund established in honour of former UCS teacher, David Lund, to deliver creative learning opportunities for young people living in the most underserved areas.  Read more about it here and grab the last few tickets here.

If you cannot make the event, but would like to make a donation to the Lund Fund you can do so here

Throughout Mental Health Awareness Week (9th-15th May), Eastside will be supporting schools across London to explore  mental health through our specialist Drama and Poetry workshops – book and find out more here

Our new project Creative Schools, generously supported by Foundation for Future London and the Stratford Circus Legacy fund is now established within Eastside and is delivering fantastic projects across East London schools in a range of disciplines whilst supporting Artsmark journeys.

In the last couple of weeks we had two Redbridge schools showcasing a mass body percussion project and a primary and secondary school in Tower Hamlets being supported to run a 2 -week Festival with multiple partners.

More information about the project can be found here and if you are an east London based school, sign up here.

Thanks to everyone for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
