Mercers' CompanyThe Mercers' Company is supporting Eastside Educational Trust to run Translation Nation in partnership with The Stephen Spender Trust. Translation Nation is a two-year programme of workshops aimed at raising the profile of community languages and literary translation for children at primary school in years 5 and 6. Eastside has produced a Translation Nation website to accompany this project which includes online resources for teachers and will ensure a legacy for the project. Translation Nation is co-funded by The Mercers' Company, The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation and Arts Council England. The Worshipful Company of Mercers is the premier Livery Company of the City of London and was incorporated under a Royal Charter in 1394. Its aim was to act as a trade association for general merchants, and especially for exporters of wool and importers of velvet, silk and other luxurious fabrics. Today, the Company exists as a charitable institution; its principal object is to make grants for the benefit of a range of charitable purposes including education, the arts, heritage and religion. The Company's motto is Honor Deo, Latin for Honour to God. |
