Esmée Fairbairn FoundationThe Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is supporting Eastside Educational Trust to run Translation Nation in partnership with The Stephen Spender Trust. Translation Nation is a two-year programme of workshops aimed at raising the profile of community languages and literary translation for children at primary school in years 5 and 6. Eastside has produced a Translation Nation website to accompany this project which includes online resources for teachers and will ensure a legacy for the project. Translation Nation is co-funded by The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, The Mercers’ Company and Arts Council England. The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation was established in 1961 by Ian Fairbairn as a memorial to his wife Esmée, who had played a prominent role in developing the Women’s Royal Voluntary Service and the Citizens Advice Bureaux. She was killed in an air raid during the Second World War. Ian Fairbairn's purpose in establishing the Foundation was to promote a greater understanding of economic and financial issues through education. The Foundation’s primary interests are in the cultural life of the UK, education and learning, the natural environment and enabling disadvantaged people to participate more fully in society. Today it is one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK. Its size notwithstanding, it remains true to the values of both its founder and the woman who inspired him. |
