croydon youth theatre organisation

50th anniversary after school drama programme

Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation (CYTO) is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year and to mark the occasion we are partnering up with CYTO to offer an exciting programme of youth theatre clubs for young people from secondary schools in Croydon, over the next two years. Students will be able to extend their theatre and presentation skills through a series of after school drama clubs and perform their work at the wonderful Shoestring Theatre in Croydon.

.

Up to twenty-four secondary schools in Croydon will have the opportunity to host a FREE 6-week drama club for committed students aged 13 - 15 who have an interest in the dramatic arts. Students will participate in taster sessions exploring scripts and developing skills in characterisation, improvisation and devising, all aimed at sparking an interest in drama and an enjoyment of live theatre. These sessions will be led by experienced professional theatre practitioners from Eastside who will be able to give students an insight into current professional practices and support the young people in developing discipline, teamwork and confidence. During the final week of the after school programme, students from different schools will come together for a rehearsed reading at the Shoestring Theatre. As well as sharing their own work, the students will participate in masterclasses with professional actors which will give them a further insight into theatre production.

.

This programme aims to not only instil a sense of pride and achievement in those participating, but also familiarise the students with CYTO, which can offer students further support and opportunities to continue to build on their skills and interests by joining the organisation.

.

We have already successfully run a number of CYTO Youth Theatre sessions in schools over the 2016 summer term and places are nearly full for the autumn term, but we still have a couple of slots left. If you are from a school in Croydon and would like to engage your students with your local Youth Theatre, then please email Gemma to find out how to apply. All sessions are FREE of charge.

.

Croydon Youth Theatre Organisation (CYTO) is all about creating great live theatre with the young people of Croydon within a safe, inclusive, supportive environment. Members are encouraged to develop not only their performance skills, but gain confidence and learn new things about themselves. Members are also given the opportunity to gain experience with all aspects of live theatre. CYTO offers young people opportunities to learn about directing and producing, backstage crafts, such as costume, hair and make-up, and also gives them a chance to learn up-to-date technical skills, including lighting, sound and scenery design as well as many other things involved in putting on a performance. CYTO strives to teach members theatre skills in an enthusiastic, creative and fun workshop environment.
