poetry & writing

a selection of literary delights

Featured here, is a collection of poems written by young people after they have worked with some of Eastside's professional poets, writers and rap artists. Though the situations may be imagined, the voices you hear are those of real young people, dealing with real issues, who in the process of discovering their own identities have found a creative outlet for their ideas. Aided by professional writers, they have put to paper their thoughts on a variety of issues relevant to the youth of today. The fruits of their poetic labour stand testament to the creative capabilities of the younger generation, capabilities we at Eastside believe in and aim to nurture and celebrate.

One powerful and defiant poem gives voice to an aborted foetus, another takes a wry look at passengers at a station during a tube strike. A homeless man is driven to suicide by the pressures of his frustrated existence, while a street cleaner trapped in a monotonous lifestyle promises himself a revolution that never comes. Several poems tackle the complex issue of climate change, demanding answers from authorities they see as being tragically disaffected and out of touch. Other poems touch on the effects of drugs, relive childhood memories, deal with loss, explore imaginary worlds and debate the role of women in society today.

We hope that you will enjoy the showcase of young peoples' poetry and writing featured here.
