Youth Voices heard through the big screen
Published 11th December 2009 at 19:12 0 Comments

On Saturday 5th December, six short films were premièred at the Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley, which explored London's cultural life from the point of view of young spoken word artists. The screening also launched the second year of Eastside's involvement with Adobe Youth Voices and Eastside is now inviting young film-makers and poets to sign up for our 2010 programme.

From the polka-dotted saris of the East (East London that is) to the gang violence found on the streets of the capital city; from the image of the Romantic poet to the eerie peace of North London cemeteries, young people declared their love for their city, blending spoken word and moving image at a screening of six short films made as part of Eastside's Adobe Youth Voices project run in 2009. The films premièred on the big screen at the 100 year old Phoenix Cinema in East Finchley. If you were unable to join us, you can watch the films in our online Gallery.

We are also looking forward to creating more films, graphic reportage, poetry and musically inspired illustrations with renewed support from Adobe Youth Voices. Eastside will be running poetry workshops during half term in February 2010.  Successful applicants will then go on to work with young film-makers to transform their spoken word pieces into professionally produced short films during the Easter holiday. To take part, potential young writers will need to fill out a short application form and submit an original poem to Eastside by 22nd January 2010. Young film-makers will need to apply by mid-February to take part in the film-making workshops. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Laura Stewart for details of eligibility and an application form. We will be announcing details about the illustration and graphics workshops soon, so look out for those in our news blog or contact us for more information.
