arts mentors
providing insights in to the professional arts world
Arts Mentors support young people with an interest in the arts to gain direct experience of a wide range of roles within the creative industries. These placements are often one to one and Arts Mentors are able to give guidance on career pathways. This is a new volunteer programme being developed by Eastside and we are currently recruiting interested professionals as potential mentors.
This
opportunity would be ideal for:
- Those in behind the scenes roles within the Creative Industries such as editors, technicians, sound and lighting designers and operators, stage management or those within management roles
- Those who are interested in working directly in young people
- Those who would like to support young people interested in entering their profession
- Those who would like to support young people studying for the 14 - 19 Creative and Media Diploma / young people who are training for a career in the arts (18 - 21) and those involved with the young people's Arts Award
You will be expected to:
- Demonstrate what your job entails both through allowing young people to shadow you and through arranging some practical experience or giving young people a small direct assisting role (depending on mentees age, aptitude and ability)
- Allowing young people to visit your place of work
- Answer questions about progression and career pathways
- Be open to working with individuals or small groups
- Be able to mentor a young person for 18 hours over a three month period
It is our aim to make any volunteering or work experience placement
worthwhile and beneficial, so you can expect the following from us:
- An introduction to working with young people
- Support and guidance throughout the mentoring process
- The chance to support young people by giving them an insight into your profession that they might otherwise not have had
Benefits of volunteering as an Arts Mentor:
- The opportunity to volunteer within your local community at a time and pace that suits you
- The opportunity to pass on your skills and give young people an insight into careers that might otherwise remain invisible to them
- The chance to help train up the next generation of industry professionals
- The chance to try something new
