About Verse vs Verse

Eastside Educational Trust is proud to have developed Verse vs Verse, a successful 3 year programme with John Lyon’s Charity reaching 450 young people from 16 classes across 9 different schools spread out over the John Lyon’s programme areas.  We have worked with the same students as they have progressed from year 4 through to year 6.  We have been surprised and delighted by the remarkable development that participants have demonstrated in their literacy skills, vocabulary, confidence, oracy, listening skills, team working skills and a marked shift in their attitudes to poetry and literature.  Participants are now familiar with the programme process and often ask their teachers ‘When is the next Verse vs Verse session?’ and they eagerly anticipate the annual poetry slam in the West End’s Criterion Theatre, which this year takes place on the 4th July.

Headteacher feedback includes:

'...Verse versus Verse gives my teachers confidence and creativity.  My children have gained confidence, developed their speaking and listening skills and their writing skills.  This has really prepared them well for secondary school...Verse versus Verse has given our children the confidence to make their own decisions...'

'...Our children are now more comfortable and confident in themselves and this programme has made my teachers better teachers...'

'...If we were offered the programme again, we'd take your arm off!...'

Now we have further funding confirmed, our desire is to build on the unique momentum gained by these first three years and to deliver with the support of John Lyon’s Charity, a further three years in which we embed the learning within participating schools, deepen the impact, connect experienced teachers with teachers joining from new schools, emphasise the best programme components whilst refining the learning areas and create legacy tools for the future.
