During the programme, presenter Michael Rosen visits Sparrow Farm School in Hounslow to find out how Translation Nation has inspired bilingual children to translate their favourite tales. Two of the children who took part in our project share stories that have been handed down to them by their parents and grandparents, originally in Urdu and Polish and they discuss why it is so important to keep those stories alive. The project, now in its second year, celebrates multi-lingualism and literature in translation in primary schools by giving Year 5 students the opportunity to work with literary translators and to re-write favourite family tales that have been handed down through the generations. The project has received acclaim for enhancing community cohesion and for increasing the participants' enthusiasm for language learning. Translation Nation is run by Eastside Educational Trust in partnership with The Stephen Spender Trust and is open to schools in London and the South East.
